Our fifth design, 005DH, was unearthed while researching the 85th Naval Construction Battalion's 1943 - 1944 Cruise Book. The 85th NCB was assigned to "Island X" in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, part of the Aleutian Islands chain. Page 22 of the book, titled "ATHLETICS", had a fascinating boxing team photo, with "Leather Pushers", written underneath. Not only did these sailors look tough but their stenciled Thunderbird sweatshirts were amazing, as well as their cool anchor stenciled shorts (see photo 5). Victory-1945 was so taken by the design that we decided to bring the Thunderbird back to life some 74 years later.

This WWII inspired sweatshirt uses a carefully replicated design from the rare 85th NCB boxing team cruise book photo, featuring a Thunderbird graphic that is hand airbrushed over a laser cut stencil. The idea here was to accurately recreate this amazing boxing design using a stencil and airbrush, the way it was likely done in 1944.

This war-era sweat is being offered in a limited Fall 2018 Edition run of Pre-Orders only and is hand airbrushed in black acrylic paint on a Runabout Goods oatmeal sweatshirt by our buddy Mike Karberg of Blue Mirror Vintage. (Note: Sizes S - M use a smaller stencil than Sizes L - XXL to maintain accurate proportions). Each sweatshirt comes with a dual sided graphic hang tag, hand inked with tee specifications and the edition number, which is attached to a vintage USN brass laundry safety pin with patriotic red, white, and blue twine.

This design is 100% Made in the USA featuring the best period correct sweatshirt available. Runabout Goods Standard Sweatshirt is 98/2 Cotton/Poly classic oatmeal fleece with a traditional 1940's style gym sweatshirt cut. These sweats fit true to size, are pre-shrunk (sanforized), feature 1" neck rib with 1/4" coverstich, have classic double-V construction, split needle coverstitch on all seams, classic 4" sleeve cuff and body rib and are Made in Los Angeles, CA.

****A Brief History on the 85TH Naval Construction Battalion****

The 85th Battalion was commissioned at Camp Allen on February 6, 1943 and moved to Davisville, R.I., then on February 9 to Gulfport, Miss., and on to Port Hueneme on May 6. On May 16, 1943 Company B was detached to form CBMU 509. Sailing from Seattle on May 25, 1943, the Battalion arrived at Dutch Harbor on May 30. On Nov. 1, 1943, the personnel of CBMU 508 were attached to the Battalion at Company B. From March 7 to August 31, 1944, a detachment of the Battalion was on duty at Attu, and on the day it returned to the told, the first echelon embarked for the States, arriving at Camp Parks on September 9. The second echelon reached Camp Parks on October 11.
